Mark Henry vs. Rusev (with Lana)

Big pop when Henry’s music began. They had Lilian Garcia sing the national anthem, which got the crowd pumped and gave this an even greater “big fight” feel. Big pop when she was done.

Henry nailed Rusev with some hard punches and Rusev went to the floor to regroup. Henry maintained control and Rusev went to the floor again. It was definitely all Mark Henry early. Rusev finally scored by drilling Henry into the ring steps on the floor. Back in the ring, Rusev killed Henry with an Avalanche in the corner and then a running back splash. He worked over Mark and locked in a camel clutch that was turned into a side chinlock. Rusev (naturally) used the Side Russian Legsweep.

Rusev continued wearing down Mark Henry. Henry fought back to his feet and scored several clotheslines. He nailed a splash in the corner but was hurting. He went for a slam but his back gave out. Rusev hit a spinkick to take Henry down.

Rusev began working over Henry’s back and went for the Accolade. Henry suddenly realized what was going on and fought his way back to his feet before Rusev could nail it. Henry went for the sitdown powerbomb but Rusev raked his face. Henry somehow caught him coming and nailed the World’s Strongest Slam but his back prevented him from following up. Rusev rolled out of the ring before Henry could capitalize.

Henry grabbed at Rusev from the ring but was nailed with a thrust kick. Rusev climbed up on the apron and nailed another kick. Rusev hit a charging thrust kick and cinched in The Accolade. Henry fought but quickly tapped out.

Your winner, Rusev!

Rusev and Lana celebrated in the ring as the Russian flag dropped down.

We see a replay of Mark Henry’s rally on Monday Night Raw. We cut to Rusev and Lana talking backstage before we go to a commercial.

Roman Reigns vs. Rusev

Rusev steps into the ring expecting an ovation but it just doesn’t happen. The bell sounds and they tear at each other, locking up and grappling until they both end up outside. After they exchange a few blows Reigns tosses Rusev back inside and begins pounding on the big dude but Rusev comes back with a vengeance. Rusev looks pretty strong but Reigns seems to shrug off some of the more powerful blows. He puts Rusev down briefly after taking to the air but it seems unlikely that we’ve seen the best of the big Bulgarian as we head into a break.

Rusev indeed battles back, powering Reigns into the corner and smashing him into the turnbuckles. He goes to the well once too often and Reigns avoids being put down for the count just yet, hitting the ropes and toppling Rusev with a flying clothesline. He then delivers a boot to Rusev’s noggin out on the apron and starts to load up the Superman punch. Seth Rollins materializes outside, distracting Reigns and Rusev puts him on the mat and sets up the clutch. Reigns escapes and plants Rusev on the canvas. Rollins comes back in and ascends the top in an attempt to crack Reigns on the scull with the briefcase. He misses and hits Rusev instead, prompting the DQ.

Result: Rusev wins via DQ after interference by Seth Rollins.

Reigns chases Rollins outside and they brawl into the crowd as Lana and Rusev celebrate inside. Mark Henry comes out and tells the crew to unfurl Old Glory from the rafters, enraging Rusev. Henry charges in and Rusev clobbers him until Henry musters up every iota and fiber of intestinal fortitude. In a pretty cool spot, Henry and Rusev charge at each other and Henry scoops up Rusev for the World’s Stongest Slam. Mark stands tall as the show fades to black.

Rusev vs. Roman Reigns ended when Seth Rollins interfered. Rusev wins by DQ. Rollins jumped off the top with his briefcase but Reigns moved and Rollins hit Rusev instead. Reigns sent Rollins to the floor and hit a Superman punch on Rusev. Rollins pulled Reigns to the floor and they brawled over the announcers table. This was a good back and forth match with some good power move sequences.

Arm Wrestling Contest: Mark Henry vs Rusev (w/ Lana)

Lana says she’s surprised Henry accepted, but he can still do the right thing and forfeit, just like the American way, and just like he did in the Olympics. Henry says he withdrew from the Olympics to injury, and he never thought he would get another chance to represent his country, but here they are.

Henry says he will unleash fury at Night of Champions, but first he will show him what he does now, and Lana dedicates Rusev’s victory to Vladimir Putin. Rusev complains about locking up for a bit, then they finally start the contest and Henry wins after a few moments.

Winner: Mark Henry

Michael Cole says Rusev and Lana asked for a rematch, this time with their left hands, and Henry agrees and they lock up again. Henry looks to be winning again, but Lana throws powder in his face, and Rusev kicks him in the head before taunting him.

Rusev waits for Henry to start to get back up, and Henry tries to wipe the powder from his eyes, but Rusev blasts him with a superkick and taunts him again.

We are back with a look at the situation between Mark Henry and Rusev that took place last week on RAW.

Lana and Rusev are at the top of the stage. Lana mentions that most people do not know that the Star Spangled Banner was written in this decrepit city. She tells people to Shut up before giving her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner but with her own lyrics edited to fit herself and Rusev.

We hear the Russian National Anthem play in the Baltimore Arena, as Lana and Rusev stand on display, with Rusev waving the flag to end the segment.

Night Of Champions Match Preview: Mark Henry vs. Rusev

Published by:
  2014/09/06

The irresistible-force paradox will be put to the test at Night of Champions when Mark Henry and Rusev tie up in a collision of super-heavyweight Superstars. Which will stand tall: the proud Texas Longhorn or the ever-confident Russian bear?

The 413-pound World’s Strongest Man and 307-pound Super-Athlete have been at odds since Henry boldly objected to Rusev and Lana’s anti-American rants on the Aug. 18 edition of Raw. In voicing his dissent, Henry, who twice represented the United States weightlifting team at the Olympics, made clear that while he does not disapprove of competitors expressing national pride, he thought Rusev and his Social Ambassador’s badmouthing of the United States had gone too far.

When Rusev tried to ambush him, Henry not only took The Hero of the Russian Federation off his feet, but he also outright outmuscled Rusev, even landing The World’s Strongest Slam. Since then, Rusev has gained an upper hand, ambushing Henry mid-match on the Sept. 1 edition of Raw. The World’s Strongest Man responded by noting his plans to open an international wing of the Hall of Pain.

Several Superstars, from former Intercontinental Champion Big E to former World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger, have tried dealing Rusev his first pinfall or submission loss, to no avail. At SummerSlam, Swagger, a former All-American grappler at the University of Oklahoma, managed to pick an ankle and reverse the Accolade, but even he was ultimately “crushed” by Rusev.

Will Mark Henry induct Rusev be the first to hand The Super-Athlete a decisive defeat? Or will Rusev continue his mighty streak of pay-per-view victories and add another former World Heavyweight Champion to his list of downed opponents? Find out when Night of Champions airs live on WWE Network on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
