Summerslam Preview: Dolph Ziggler vs Rusev

Published by:
  2015/08/18

At The Biggest Party of the Summer, Dolph Ziggler gets his groove, and his girl, back. All he’s got to do is beat one of the biggest, baddest, most fearsome Superstars WWE has seen in years. NBD.

If there was ever a word to describe Dolph Ziggler’s rivalry with Rusev, it would be “personal.” It was personal when Lana gave The Bulgarian Brute the heave-ho as her client and partner, instead finding comfort in the crook of The Showoff’s biceps. It was personal when Ziggler took advantage of Rusev’s ankle injury to humiliate him without fear of retaliation, and it was personal when a healed-up Rusev got the jump on Ziggler and claimed his revenge with a crutch to the windpipe that put Zig Man on the shelf for a month.

While time off has restored The Showoff’s voice to normal, it certainly has done nothing to dull The Bulgarian Brute’s animosity toward his rival: Rusev largely spent Ziggler’s convalescence running down the former World Heavyweight Champion and demeaning Lana in his absence. But Rusev’s also become vulnerable since then; the formerly undefeated monster has suffered losses to Cesaro and Roman Reigns in the month of Ziggler’s absence, suggesting he’s spent too much time focusing on mocking an opponent that isn’t there instead of keeping his head in the game.

It took The Bulgarian Brute’s most heinous act yet — commanding his new ambassador Summer Rae to place Lana in the Accolade — to spur The Showoff back into action, and now, with the bad blood boiling over the brim, the bout between the two is finally set for SummerSlam. Will The Showoff swivel and superkick his way to victory over the Bulgarian monster? Or will Rusev leave his foe crushed in King’s County? Tune into SummerSlam at 7/6 C Sunday, August 23 on the award-winning WWE Network to find out!

Extreme Rules Preview: United States Champion John Cena vs. Ruse...

Published by:
  2015/04/14

WWE’s premier international rivalry will be taken to the extreme when John Cena defends his United States Championship against Rusev at Extreme Rules in a Russian Chain Match.

The WWE Universe found out about the lethal stipulation on the April 13 Raw, when Rusev — with a steel chain wrapped around his fist — blindsided the Cenation leader in a vicious attack. Adding insult to injury, Lana then revealed that she had successfully negotiated the new terms of the previously announced match, which will see Rusev and Cena tethered at the wrist by a length of heavy-duty chain.

Living up to Extreme Rules’ reputation, both Superstars will be allowed to use the chain at their discretion, whether using it as a whip or to add weight to a punch, as Rusev demonstrated on Raw.

Though Lana’s added stipulation may be a game-changer for Rusev, the WWE Universe is left to wonder if the issues between The Super Athlete and The Ravishing Russian are fully resolved. For the past several weeks, it seemed the powerful couple had experienced serious miscommunications. First, Lana accepted the match with Cena at WrestleMania on Rusev’s behalf without the former champion’s consent; then, Rusev knocked into Lana at The Show of Shows, allowing Cena to capitalize and win the bout.

By turning Extreme Rules’ U.S. Title Match into a Russian Chain Match, has Lana prevented dissension from creeping further into her relationship with The Hero of the Russian Federation?

Cena, however, is no stranger to chains, either. As the onetime leader of the Chain Gang, the U.S. Champion often leveraged a steel chain as a weapon in his salad days. Will the WWE Universe see Cena again embrace his darker side in his quest to retain the stars-and-stripes title? Or can Rusev, with the added benefit of the Russian Chain Match stipulation, regain the title? And just what type of bruising action is in store for both Superstars?

Find out which Superstar will reign supreme when Extreme Rules takes place live on WWE Network Sunday, April 26!

Night Of Champions Match Preview: Mark Henry vs. Rusev

Published by:
  2014/09/06

The irresistible-force paradox will be put to the test at Night of Champions when Mark Henry and Rusev tie up in a collision of super-heavyweight Superstars. Which will stand tall: the proud Texas Longhorn or the ever-confident Russian bear?

The 413-pound World’s Strongest Man and 307-pound Super-Athlete have been at odds since Henry boldly objected to Rusev and Lana’s anti-American rants on the Aug. 18 edition of Raw. In voicing his dissent, Henry, who twice represented the United States weightlifting team at the Olympics, made clear that while he does not disapprove of competitors expressing national pride, he thought Rusev and his Social Ambassador’s badmouthing of the United States had gone too far.

When Rusev tried to ambush him, Henry not only took The Hero of the Russian Federation off his feet, but he also outright outmuscled Rusev, even landing The World’s Strongest Slam. Since then, Rusev has gained an upper hand, ambushing Henry mid-match on the Sept. 1 edition of Raw. The World’s Strongest Man responded by noting his plans to open an international wing of the Hall of Pain.

Several Superstars, from former Intercontinental Champion Big E to former World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger, have tried dealing Rusev his first pinfall or submission loss, to no avail. At SummerSlam, Swagger, a former All-American grappler at the University of Oklahoma, managed to pick an ankle and reverse the Accolade, but even he was ultimately “crushed” by Rusev.

Will Mark Henry induct Rusev be the first to hand The Super-Athlete a decisive defeat? Or will Rusev continue his mighty streak of pay-per-view victories and add another former World Heavyweight Champion to his list of downed opponents? Find out when Night of Champions airs live on WWE Network on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Summerslam Match Preview: Jack Swagger vs Rusev

Published by:
  2014/08/02

Jack Swagger prepares to defend America’s honor at SummerSlam when he takes on the hulking Hero of the Russian Federation, Rusev, in a Flag Match.

Lana, Rusev’s social ambassador, laid out a challenge for the match on the Aug. 1 edition of SmackDown, a challenge that Zeb Colter immediately and zealously accepted on Swagger’s behalf. At SummerSlam, Old Glory will be hanging in one corner of the ring and the Russian flag in another, and the first Superstar to incapacitate his opponent enough so he can scale the turnbuckles and capture his own flag will be declared the victor.

To date, no Superstar has given Rusev more trouble than Colter’s 6-foot-7, 275-pound, corn-fed “Big Hoss.” Lana’s Super Athlete has yet to suffer a pinfall or submission loss since debuting in WWE in April, but Swagger is the lone Superstar to have notched a win of any kind — albeit, a disqualification victory — over the Bulgarian-born Russian icon.

The clashes so far between Swagger and Rusev have all been hard-hitting affairs, but their Aug. 27 showdown now contains an overtly patriotic twist. When the dust settles, will it be the Stars and Stripes — which Colter says stands for “pick-up trucks, pretty girls and beers” — that’s waved proudly? Or will Lana and Rusev have their way, and it will be the red, white and blue of the Russian flag that’s triumphantly displayed for all to see?

Watch these two heavyweight warriors tie up at SummerSlam, which airs live on WWE Network and pay-per-view Sunday, Aug. 17, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Battleground Match Preview: Jack Swagger vs. Rusev

Published by:
  2014/07/16

Can Rusev crush a Real American? That will be the question on the minds of the WWE Universe when former World Champion Jack Swagger and the undefeated Rusev throw hands in a super-heavyweight American-Russian showdown at WWE Battleground.

It’s a collision that WWE fans have anticipated ever since Lana and the Bulgarian-born Hero of the Russian Federation began trash-talking the stars-and-stripes many months ago. Patriotic to the core, Swagger and outspoken propagator Zeb Colter haven’t always endeared themselves to audiences with their polarizing messages.

Yet, by confronting Rusev and Lana on the June 30 edition of Raw and pointing out that it’s the freedom of speech that allows them to spew their anti-American sentiments, Swagger and Colter immediately became unlikely heroes, leading perhaps the most resounding “We the People!” chant in history.

Swagger and Colter also spent weeks challenging Rusev, and on July 14, the powerhouse finally accepted after a Russia Détente broke down on Raw.

Swagger has done more than just garner the support of the WWE Universe; the 6-foot-7 former University of Oklahoma All-American has also taken the 305-pound Super Athlete off his feet — a rare sight thus far in Rusev’s blossoming WWE career.

Now that he’s leading the charge in a fight that much of the WWE Universe can get behind, will Swagger be able to stop Lana’s monstrous newcomer? Or will The Real American’s night on July 20 come to an unceremonious end with Lana’s command of “Crush!” and Rusev locking in the Accolade?

National pride will be at stake when these two tanks — both unflinching in their beliefs and unwilling to back down — meet head-on. Don’t miss the brawl when WWE Battleground airs live on WWE Network and pay-per-view Sunday, July 20, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Payback Match Preview: Rusev (with Lana) vs. Big E

Published by:
  2014/05/31

null

For the first time since his intimidating introduction to WWE, Rusev will square off with a competitor who exhibits equally imposing strength and explosiveness. This Sunday at WWE Payback, the 300-plus-pound powerhouse will go head-to-head with Big E in a showdown that is sure to be a hard-hitting affair.

Since his debut, The Bulgarian Brute has not only defeated, but destroyed every opponent thrown his way, doing so at his Social Ambassador Lana’s cruel command. In addition to the burly Bulgarian’s unsympathetic brutality inside the ring, The Ravishing Russian’s verbal assault on America has generated a great deal of disdain from the WWE Universe.

Rusev’s ruthless Social Ambassador took her attack on all things American one step too far when she ordered her client to “crush” WWE Hall of Famer “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan on the May 12 edition of Raw. Fortunately for the WWE Legends’ House star, Big E had enough of the Russia residents’ callous tactics, saving the patriotic Superstar from impending danger before getting knocked from the ring by The Super Athlete.

Two weeks later, after bumping Rusev from the ring, Big E proudly waved Old Glory in the face of his foreign foe. Now, with patriotic pride raising the stakes, the Florida native has payback on his mind and hopes for a Big Ending to his conflict with Rusev.

What will happen when two of WWE’s most powerful Superstars collide inside the squared-circle? Find out when WWE Payback airs live on WWE Network and pay-per-view this Sunday, June 1, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
